My Favorite Shooting Resources for Women
For newbies, getting started with shooting can be intimidating. I have been shooting handguns for over eight years, and I still get nervous when people want to talk guns. From the beginning I wasn’t always searching for firearm education. It took me awhile to get into the community. My interest would peak, then something would happen such as a bad day at the range, or smart comment from another know-it-all shooter. I would step back and really question what I was doing.
Let’s face it, like me, most of the females trying to get into this lifestyle are being educated by the men in the their lives. While that can have its pros and cons, I found it comforting and educational to find like minded women in the industry. In my search I found some amazing shooting resources, not only for women but for all beginning shooters. Here are a few my favorite resources for people just getting started.
Not Your Average Gun Girls Podcast
Not Your Average Gun Girls is a podcast hosted by Alexo Athletica’s Amy Robbins and Style Me Tactical’s Emily Valentine. This podcast covers a variety of topics from a female perspective. Discussions about the concealed carry lifestyle, training, new products, women’s fashion, beauty and fitness are handled in a conversational style. I love this podcast. Although I have never met Emily or Amy, every time I listen it feels like I am sitting down with my best gal pals for a chat.
Armed With Contrast
Armed With Contrast is and Instagram account that is run by two strong females, Heather and Tayler. They are knowledgeable in the firearm industry and give great budget friendly concealed carry outfit ideas. Included with their outfit ideas are numerous different ways to carry. I find them relatable. Both of them, like me, are moms with full time jobs, just finding a spec of time in their day to do what they love.
NRA Women’s Love At First Shot
The Love At First Shot TV series covers it all, from different types of guns and ammo to shooting fundamentals, hunting, and even competitions. The best part is, it is all from a woman’s perspective. Natalie Foster and Julie Golob do an outstanding job reaching women from all different backgrounds and educating them on the gun world.
Style Me Tactical
Emily’s Valentine’s Style Me Tactical blog follows her though her firearm journey from beginners’ classes to being on the Love At First Shot tv show. Her personality is inviting. Plus, not only does her blog focus on concealed carry she also features other self defense tools. Last but not least, her sense of fashion is one I continuously envy.
USCCA
The USCCA offers educational articles and training for all levels. One of the things I love most is they offer women only training classes. On their website they make it easy to find female instructors in your area. These are all benefits you can enjoy without their membership. With their membership comes the Concealed Carry Magazine, access to training videos, lessons, and qualifications for all levels. Members also receive Self Defense Liability Insurance, access to the USCCA Community and discounts with numerous industry partners. The USCCA allows you to explore the concealed carry lifestyle in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace.
My motivation to start Baking With Bullets was to help women, like myself learn and become comfortable with firearms. My goal is to provide women with content to help safely understand and utilize guns. Over the past three years my knowledge in the gun world has increased, thanks to these awesome shooting resources and my wonderful husband. I have gone from the confused “what do I do next” gun owner to “I can’t wait to learn more”. Although I am far from an expert, I am looking forward to my journey of more training and education .
Happy Carrying,
